What TA Luft Requires – and Why It Matters
TA Luft is one of Germany’s key environmental regulations for industrial plants. Wherever gases, vapors or other emission-relevant media are handled, operators must ensure that flange connections remain technically leak-tight.
Achieving compliance involves more than selecting the right gasket. Pressure, temperature, bolt load and assembly quality all influence sealing performance. In many applications, a leak rate of 10⁻² mg/(s·m) serves as a benchmark for demonstrating technical tightness, while VDI 2290 provides practical guidance for design and assembly.
The Simplest Way to Demonstrate Compliance
Several methods can be used to demonstrate the tightness of a flange connection, including physical testing, FEM analysis and calculations according to EN 1591-1. While all approaches are accepted, they differ significantly in cost, complexity and implementation effort.
For most applications, EN 1591-1 offers the most practical route to compliance. Using certified EN 13555 gasket data, the calculation evaluates how a flange connection behaves under actual operating conditions, including pressure, temperature and bolt load. This allows potential sealing issues to be identified before installation and often eliminates the need for costly testing programs.
